What are the advantages of 36 V technology?

The indicated voltage alone does not give any information about the power of the battery or the machine on the battery.

Power is defined on the basis of voltage and current intensity: power = voltage x current intensity → W = V × A
The correlation between voltage and current intensity, as well as the technical implementation of the entire system, are decisive in defining the real power of the machine on battery power.
For battery-powered hand machines, a compact structure and low weight are decisive for ensuring easy working. But to obtain compact products, certain technical restrictions must be taken into consideration:
Either we put on a high voltage (80 V, for example), but technically, we can then only obtain weak electric currents, unless we increase the number of elements and, therefore, the weight of the machine.
Or, on the contrary, a reasonably high voltage (36 V) is used, and it is thus possible to obtain higher electric currents, while limiting the number of elements and the weight of the machine.
Like many other well-known manufacturers of battery-powered machines, STIHL has opted for a system with a maximum voltage of 36 V. This technically reasonably high voltage and the possibility of therefore offering higher electric currents guarantee optimum power from battery-powered machines and excellent durability for the future.
By reducing the number of electrical components, battery-powered machines are more compact, lightweight and robust.

The energy supply of the electric motor is actively adjusted according to the type of use. The machine thus constantly provides maximum power, even in the event of extreme use. On the other hand, if this maximum power is not necessary for the current use, the power is automatically reduced. This saves battery power and therefore extends the charging time.
Powerful batteries in a compact design, available in various variants (choice of high energy density or low weight), guarantee an exceptional duration of use and consistent work.
Cutting tools suitable for battery-powered machines, such as the ¼" P chain, provide optimum performance, whatever the use.
Finally, not only the energy density of a battery, but also the efficiency and implementation of the entire system greatly influences the runtime and performance of the machine. The 56 or 80 V systems offer no additional advantage over STIHL's 36 V battery system.

Does the battery need to be recharged during storage?

If the battery is used regularly, it is not necessary to recharge it during storage. Even a depleted battery can be stored for several months without risking being damaged by a total discharge.

STIHL recommends storing batteries or machines with built-in battery at a state of charge between 40 and 60% (2 green LEDs) if the battery is not expected to be used for more than one month. This prevents total discharge of the battery when stored for a period of various years, but also reduces the natural aging of the lithium-ion cells, which has a positive effect on the service life of the battery.
